This is an interesting issue that I have been looking at also recently. It seems there is really no data out there on the average number of conferences academics go to, and how this is changed over the last 20 years. Everyone knows we got to too many, and most are 'transmit'-mode, less 'listen'-mode. But all data is anecdotal as far as I can see. And we spend a lot of money on them...
